Over the past 40 years ethicists such as Peter Singer and Hugh Lafollette have made powerful philosophical arguments in defense of the rights of animals. These arguments have provided the basis for the actions, including legislation and lawsuits of animal rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. In short, this view states that humans and animals are morally equivalent.
Thus, no species has the right to use another species. PETA’s co-founder, Ingrid Newkirk, summed this position up when she said, “A rat is a pig, is a dog, is a boy.”
