Among the bigger disappointments of this year’s legislative session was the failure — again — for lawmakers to craft protection for the state’s water resources, more specifically the spring system, the Lower Santa Fe and the Ichetucknee rivers.
A bill setting aside $300 million to begin the process of protecting springs was beaten down by lobbyists. The Tampa Bay Times editorialized, “The speed of the collapse of a bipartisan senate bill was remarkable, even for a legislature that often acts as a subsidiary of the state’s most powerful industries.”
