Varela Stamp Unveiled
A U.S. postage stamp honoring Father Felix Varela was unveiled. As child, Cuban-born Varela lived in St. Augustine with his military officer grandfather. He returned to St. Augustine from New York in ill health and died Feb. 25, 1853. Varela established the first Spanish-language newspaper in the United States.
