TALLAHASSEE — Florida would establish new sentencing guidelines for juveniles who are tried as adults and convicted of serious felonies, under legislation approved Wednesday by a state Senate committee. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled states cannot impose life-without-parole sentences on juveniles, leaving Florida law in need of an update. “The courts are asking us to give them guidance,” the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Rob Bradley, R-Orange Park, said Wednesday. “It is the legislature’s job to define crimes and fix punishments.” read more
