Democratic strategists were particularly dismayed at the loss of their congressional candidate, Alex Sink, in last Tuesday’s special election in Florida’s 13th congressional district, fearing it might be seen as foretelling doom for the Obama presidency, with nearly three years still to run.
This is despite the fact that special election results can be a poor harbinger of the next general election to come. Among other reasons, voter turnout is usually very low. And in a congressional race, local issues may play an inordinate role in the outcome.
