Mayor Joe Boles was heading home at lunchtime not long ago. His dog, he said, needed out for a little personal time with the yard.
The mayor got caught with the Bridge of Lions up — coming and going. It turned a 15-minute mission of mercy into 45-minute ordeal. And, he said, neither opening appeared to him to be at the scheduled time.
Boles decided then and there to see if there wasn’t a better way to manage the bridge. He vowed to contact the Coast Guard, which oversees the operation of it, to see if it and the city couldn’t sit down and reassess bridge protocols.
