Service inspired by famous poem
A service inspired by a tragic 1930 lynching and the poem “Strange Fruit” written in response to that event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ, 5880 U.S. 1 South.
Written by teacher Abel Meeropol to expose racism, particularly the lynching of African-Americans, the poem “Strange Fruit” was set to lyrics and made famous by jazz singer Billie Holliday who performed a musical version at the end of her performances.
