Easter has been observed in St. Augustine since the spring of 1566, when Easter fell on April 17.
It was the first spring that Europeans had lived in the St Augustine area. Spaniards led by Pedro Menendez de Aviles had established our city the previous September.
Easter 1566 was no doubt a time of stress and uncertainty for St Augustine’s residents. In the week before St. Augustine’s first Easter observance, dissatisfied settlers had started a short-lived rebellion and their ringleader was hanged.
