Among the closer votes in the final week of the legislative session was the issue of raising speed limits on Florida’s highways. It squeaked by in the House by a vote of 58 to 56. The Senate cleared it as well, though by a larger margin.
The bill to raise speed limits to 75 mph now sits on Gov. Rick Scott’s desk. That’s where it should remain.
The bill does not raise speed limits across the board, but allows the Florida Department of Transportation to do so — selectively. Interstates could go up to 75 mph, 70 on secondary roads and a divided median and 60 mph on rural roads.
