Bucky Sykes’ family grew potatoes in St. Johns County for five generations. Once that was all they needed to do. But so much has changed.
Now that sandy soil is growing things like bitter melon, bok choy and daikon radishes, all headed for the Asian markets of New York.
Danny Johns is still growing potatoes at Blue Sky Farms, 20 million pounds on his 700 acres last year. But they’re not headed for potato chip plants like they once did. Now he’s growing 23 varieties that go straight to the table.
