Letter: Boles' qualities are proven for St. Augustine mayor E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
Boles’ qualities are proven Editor: Having just carefully read and compared the information about Joe Boles and Nancy Shaver in The Record’s voter’s guide, I found several important and distinct differences to be glaringly obvious. ? City residents have been very well-served by Joe Boles. It is highly unlikely that a politically inexperienced, relative newcomer could possibly care more or contribute more to the success of the city than Joe Boles. read more

Out-of-patience investors sell off Amazon E-mail

NEW YORK — Amazon has long acted like an ideal customer on its own website: A freewheeling big spender with no worries about balancing a checkbook. Investors confident in founder and CEO Jeff Bezos’ invest-and-expand strategy flooded into the stock as the company revolutionized shopping, upended the book industry and took on the cloud — even though its vast range of initiatives ate up all the company’s profits. read more

Educate sexting teens before it's too late E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
This will make me sound old, but I’m going to say it. In a million years — in 2 million years — I would never stick a camera down my pants to take a picture. So I will never get this sexting craze. I can’t empathize with a teenage girl seeking acceptance by sharing photos of her breasts. I can’t sympathize with a boy hoping to impress his crush with a 10-megapixel shot of his privates. read more

Two Jaguars figure to see their roles increase starting Sunday against Miami because of defensive end Andre Branch’s groin injury that will sideline him six weeks: Chris Smith and Ryan Davis. Smith was promoted from the practice squad Monday and coach Gus Bradley said he has a “good chance” to be active. Davis has played 20 percent of the defensive snaps (104 of 509) this year, including a season-high 23 against Cleveland. In third down pass-rushing situations, Davis has generally lined up at defensive tackle to give the Jaguars a more athletic presence inside. read more

Interceptions part of Bortles' learning curve E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
It could have been a lot worse for Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles through his first five games. He could be winless and on his second head coach like Oakland’s Derek Carr is this year. ‘None of the above’ Editor: I read this morning’s paper concerning Mr. Thrasher and the trouble he is causing, along with his fellow Republicans in seat-switching and special elections. The fact that taxpayers (me!), will get stuck with over $300,000 per special election shows Very clearly that they do not give a darn for the good of the citizens, only their own political glory. With increasing threats to the U.S. from abroad — ISIS in the Middle east, Russia invading the Ukraine, Iran building a nuclear weapon, saber-rattling by South Korea, China pushing into the South China Sea against Japan and our borders insecure — this is not the time to reduce our armed forces. Abby: Pesky peacocks are featured in invitation to dinner party E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
DEAR ABBY: A former colleague recently moved nearby and sent us an invitation to dinner at her new residence. She lives in an area that’s populated by wild peacocks, which she knew before she moved there. A condition of her invitation is that we (my spouse and I) agree to use a type of high-powered water gun to shoot at the peacocks from her balcony while we are visiting. I understand that these birds can be messy (I assume from their droppings). However, we find conditioning the visit upon our willingness to shoot water at the birds disconcerting. read more
