News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
A simple vote can make a difference Editor: Our beaches, rivers and unique wildlife like the manatee are Florida’s strongest magnets to attract visitors, new residents and businesses. Yet for too many years, state lawmakers have failed to address the steady deterioration of our natural water and land resources, threatening our most powerful economic engine. Florida’s formerly clear, sandy-bottomed rivers, streams, lakes, springs and bays are in desperate need of attention. read more

Leonard Pitts Jr.: The compromising of our civil rights E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
Last week, a federal judge told us what we already knew. Namely, that police in Ferguson, Mo., violated the rights of protesters demonstrating against the shooting death of Michael Brown. U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry struck down an ad hoc rule under which cops had said people could not stand still while peacefully protesting. Some were told they couldn’t stop walking for more than five seconds; others, that they had to walk faster. read more

Tempers flare at Charlotte as title hopes fade E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
CONCORD, N.C. — Matt Kenseth, usually so calm and composed, lost his cool and attacked Brad Keselowski at Charlotte Motor Speedway. If Kenseth is fighting, then tempers are certainly running quite high. They reached a boiling point in the aftermath of Saturday night’s race as Keselowski, Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson all saw their championship hopes fade to near-desperate status. The pressure is on — every week — in NASCAR’s new championship format, and the frayed nerves unraveled on the track, on pit road and in the garage. read more

Jaguars Notebook: E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
NASHVILLE — Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts returned to the line-up Sunday, compiling 103 yards receiving on a career-high 10 catches. But three caveats are required: The Jaguars lost 16-14 to the Tennessee Titans. Shorts had a critical fumble at the Titans’ 10-yard line with 4:25 remaining. And six catches and 73 yards of Shorts’ production came in the fourth quarter. But at least Shorts came out of the game in good order physically — he missed Weeks 1-2 and 5 with hamstring injuries — and returned to practice last Thursday. read more

Froma Harrop: Ebola and 41 million uninsured Americans E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
With the first diagnosed case of the deadly Ebola virus in the United States located in Dallas, Texans are understandably alarmed. The patient just died. Gov. Rick Perry has established a task force to address the Ebola threat. Not a bad idea but still a feeble response coming from a governor who refused to expand Medicaid in his state, leaving millions of his people outside the health care system. About 6 million Texans are now walking around without health insurance. That’s almost 1 in 4 residents -- the highest rate of uninsured in the country. read more

Melbourne area a hotbed of ancient bones E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
MELBOOURNE — Bob Gross’ fascination with archaeology here — from shell middens to skulls studied by the Smithsonian — started when he was 9 years old and playing Parcheesi with a neighbor lady in exchange for Kool-Aid and cookies. Frances Arnold-Shave, the neighbor, told him about living in a cabin on a Native American mound near Malabar. “You tell that to a 9-year-old boy, and, ‘Where? Where?’” Gross recalled his response in 1957. The next day, he pedaled his bike down the two-lane U.S. 1 to the mound. He found two artifacts: a pottery shard and wrought-iron hinge. read more

Editorial: DeSantis has earned a 2nd term E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
We’re not going to waste your time here. Ron DeSantis told the voters in 2012 who he was and what he would try to accomplish if elected. He was elected, and he’s doing what he said he would do. With DeSantis, what you see is what you get. He’s a no-nonsense, Jeffersonian Republican. His opponent, David Cox, seems just the opposite — completely aside from political ideology. His campaign platform seems based on rhetoric. His 45-minute talk with us was built on cliche: Help everyone and figure out how to pay for it later. read more

Krauthammer: Middle East allies' double games E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
During the 1944 Warsaw uprising, Stalin ordered the advancing Red Army to stop at the outskirts of the city while the Nazis, for 63 days, annihilated the non-Communist Polish partisans. Nugent's miss leaves Bengals, Panthers tied 37-all E-mail
News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
CINCINNATI — Cam Newton re-emerged as dual-threat danger. Andy Dalton missed on only one pass in overtime — a sack-saving throwaway, no less. Back and forth they went, rallying their teams through a pulsating finish. Mike Nugent’s miss left it tied, unsatisfying and confusing. And perfectly appropriate. Nugent missed a 36-yard field goal attempt on the final play of overtime Sunday, leaving the Bengals and Panthers in a 37-37 tie — the NFL’s first this season. A game full of big plays and big comebacks was basically a wash. read more
